July: Self Love
This month, we’ll be diving deep into the theme of self-love, exploring what it truly means, and how we can begin to cultivate more of it in our everyday lives.
Western society has long conditioned us to believe that true happiness and wholeness can only be found in romantic relationships.
Even after women were liberated from domestic roles, we were still sold the same ‘disney’ fairytale. Love has become the destination, not the practice, and our story is only complete when we find “the one.” This myth has warped our understanding of love, by making romantic love the ultimate goal.
It’s taught us that our worth depends on being chosen by someone else, so love is something to chase, to earn, and to possess. Moreover, society reinforces the illusion that if we’re not in a relationship, we must be missing something, lacking, lonely, or somehow incomplete. Without romantic love, we’re made to feel as if we’re failing at life.
But what if we’ve got it all backwards?
Osho Rajneesh describes three levels of love, and when we look honestly at how we relate to love in today’s world, we can see all three playing out.
The lowest level of love, is attachment to objects, and loving things that cannot love us back. Shopping, food, technology, and constant material distractions are used to fill the emptiness.
But no amount of consumption can satisfy the deeper human need to be seen, to be loved, and to belong. We’re left emptier each time we try and find solace in objects, and often reach for the next quick fix.
The second level of love, is loving another person. This is where most of us live. We pour ourselves into someone else, handing them a silent script of hopes, expectations, and needs we don’t know how to meet ourselves.
We look to our ‘other half’ for validation, identity, and safety. knowing it’s impossible for someone to carry that burden for long. Eventually, the illusion cracks, and we’re left wondering if we simply chose the wrong person.
The highest level of love is self-love. Not in the surface-level, bubble bath kind of way (that’s self-care), but in the radical act of embracing all of who you are.
Loving your insecurities, embracing your flaws, sitting with your shadows, and being able to hold yourself through your pain, shame, and vulnerability with compassion and forgiveness, instead of criticism, or hate.
This kind of love sets us free.
We stop outsourcing our self-worth, our self-confidence, and our self-belief, and become rooted, sovereign, and unshakable.
We no longer need to perform to be accepted. We stop fearing our sensitivity, or hiding our flaws. We’re not looking for someone to fix us or save us, because we’ve already come home to ourselves. And from that place of wholeness, we no longer need saviours or solutions. Instead we can meet others as equals.
True love begins with self-intimacy. If we can’t sit with ourselves in honesty and affection, how can we expect to offer that to someone else?
When we start to reclaim and embrace the parts of ourselves we were taught to hide, our grief, our rage, our shame, we remove the mask. And in that vulnerability, real connection becomes possible.
So this month, instead of buying into the illusion of love, what if you turned inward and gave yourself the love you’ve been waiting for?
Daily Self-love Ritual (with or without Ritual Cacao)
Every day this week set aside ten quiet minutes to simply be with yourself, no distractions, no agenda, or to do list.
Place your hand on your heart and ask,
What part of me needs love right now?
What have I been waiting for someone else to give me that I can begin giving myself?Let the answers come naturally
Then ask yourself: Can I meet this part of me with the tenderness I’d offer a dear friend? This is where real love begins, in your own presence.
This kind of love doesn’t fade, doesn’t disappoint, and doesn’t depend on anyone else.
And once you master it, it is one of the most powerful forces in the world.
Quote for the month:
“You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere.”
